Quick answer: every roster character tracks a relationship with other Operators. Bonds can improve by deploying together, completing Tactical Missions or Operations, and using cooperative actions such as Call for Backup or support. Higher Bond levels enable Cross Training bonuses; maximum Bonds can unlock a special Passive benefit.

Bonds are pair-specific

Xbox Wire's developer interview explains that every character has a tracked relationship with every other character. Some authored pairs can even begin with negative relationships. This is more than a universal "team morale" meter: the game remembers how specific pairs get along.

That design changes roster planning. Deploying the same four Operators repeatedly can deepen a few relationships quickly, but rotating the squad creates a broader network of useful Bonds and keeps injured characters from being overused.

How to raise Bonds

Official Bit Reactor community material names several Bond-building activities: completing Operations, finishing Tactical Missions and using Call for Backup. The Xbox interview adds support actions such as a Medic healing a Soldier and strategy-layer assignments where characters work together.

The pattern is consistent: cooperation builds relationship progress. If you want two Operators to become a stronger pair, give them real shared work rather than waiting for a passive timer.

Cross Training

When a Bond level increases, the two Operators can Cross Train for a permanent combat-stat bonus according to the official systems overview. At maximum Bond, a special Cross Training can provide a stronger Passive Ability benefit.

This makes Bond investment mechanically meaningful even when the characters are not currently deployed together. It also gives custom roster development a long-term dimension that sits beside normal Focus Tree progression.

Bonds and Focus Points

The Personnel Facility's Focus Tree spends Focus Points to improve Talents, abilities and passives, and official community material says Focus Points are earned primarily through increasing Bonds. That makes relationship building part of character progression rather than an optional social minigame.

If a build feels underdeveloped, the answer may not be "farm more kills." Rotating compatible pairs and deliberately using teamwork can contribute to the Focus economy that upgrades the Operator.

Dilemmas can change relationships

Bonds are tested outside combat too. Official pre-launch/community material describes story Dilemmas where Operators express opinions on a decision and Hawks' resolution can change relationships. EA's FAQ similarly notes that Operation choices can affect Bonds and side missions.

For players who want an optimal relationship network, that creates tension: the best resource reward is not always the choice your preferred companion likes. A guide should avoid pretending there is one universally correct Dilemma answer unless the user explicitly wants spoilers.

Is this a romance system?

No. Developers have explicitly said Zero Company does not have a romance system. Bonds represent trust, friction, friendship and working relationships between squad members. They produce progression and story texture without becoming a dating mechanic.

Practical Bond strategy

  1. Pair Operators whose combat roles already create support or assist opportunities.
  2. Rotate the roster enough to avoid having one maxed pair and a company full of strangers.
  3. Use Call for Backup when the attack is tactically sensible; it can contribute to both combat and relationship growth.
  4. Check the Personnel Facility after Bond increases so you do not ignore available Cross Training.
  5. Treat story Dilemmas as relationship choices as well as narrative/resource choices.
  6. In permadeath campaigns, avoid concentrating every key Bond bonus on one fragile Operator if you can diversify safely.
